2011 Translational Research Professorship Recipient Investigates Personalized Care, Genomic Testing

Despite a number of new drug approvals in 2011, there are still major challenges in developing effective oncology therapeutics and drug combinations that demonstrate signifi cant survival advantages. Karnofsky Award Presented to Distinguished Hematologist/Oncologist

Kanti R. Rai, MD, an internationally recognized expert on adult leukemia, is the recipient of the 2012 David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award and Lecture. Dr. Rai is Chief of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Research and Treatment Program at North Shore-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health System, the Joel Finkelstein Cancer Foundation Professor of Medicine at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, and investigator at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Dr. Rowan Chlebowski Receives ASCO/ACS Award

Rowan T. Chlebowski, MD, PhD, a breast cancer specialist and cancer prevention expert, is the recipient of the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)/American Cancer Society (ACS) Award. Dr. Chlebowski is the Chief of Medical Oncology and Hematology at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a Professor of Medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine, and conducts research at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Chief of the Breast Surgery Service, Co-Chief of the Breast Program, and Anne Burnett Windfohr Chair of Clinical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), Dr. Morrow is the first surgeon to receive the award. Pediatric Oncologist Memorialized with New Award: ASCO Remembers Dr. James B. Nachman

The Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology has established a new award to honor the memory of James B. Nachman, MD, an internationally renowned pediatric cancer specialist who passed away unexpectedly in June 2011 while on a rafting trip in the Grand Canyon with adolescents and young adults that he had treated for cancer. At a young age, Bryan P. Schneider, MD, lost his grandmother, who helped raise him, to cancer. Since that time, he has devoted his career to cancer research. As associate director of the Indiana Institute for Personalized Medicine and an associate professor of medicine and medical/molecular genetics at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, Dr. Schneider was named recipient of the 2011 Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Advanced Clinical Research Award (ACRA) in Breast Cancer at the 2011 Breast Cancer Symposium. Dr. Matti S. Aapro: Geriatric Oncology is Complex, Requires Multidisciplinary Vision to Advance

Patients with cancer benefit signifi cantly from surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, yet many senior adults have been traditionally viewed as too frail to cope with these treatment options. Since the late 1980s, Matti S. Aapro, MD, of the Multidisciplinary Oncology Institute, Clinique De Genolier, Switzerland, has been involved in the design and implementation of clinical trials in older patients to address such realities.
