ASCO Guideline Recommends Using Actual Body Weight to Calculate Chemotherapy Dose for Obese Patients with Cancer
On April 2, 2012, ASCO issued a new clinical practice guideline on chemotherapy dosing for obese adult patients with cancer. The guideline recommended that doctors routinely use an obese patient’s actual body weight—rather than an ideal body weight or other estimate—to calculate the appropriate dose of nearly all chemotherapy drugs. The clinical guideline on weight-based chemotherapy dosing was published this spring in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and a commentary was published in the Journal of Oncology Practice.
